Roland Hartup Combes was born in 1898 at Newark and was the son of George a bricklayers foreman and Caroline Combes née Hartup of 1 Charles Street, Newark. His father George was born in 1865 at Newark and his mother Caroline Hartup was born in 1863 at Milson, Bedfordshire, they were married in 1882 at Newark and went on to have 13 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Newark were, Lillian b1883, George b1885, Charles b1887, Alfred b1889, Emily b1890, Mabel b1892, Albert b1894, Roland b1898, Cyril b1900, Caroline b1902, Phillip b1905 and Frederick b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Charles Street, Newark and are shown as George 49 yrs a bricklayers foreman, he is living with his wife Caroline 48 yrs and their children, Emily 21 yrs a parlour maid, Roland 13 yrs a scholar, Cyril 11 yrs a scholar, Caroline 9 yrs a scholar,, Phillip 6 yrs a scholar and Frederick 3 yrs.

Military History

Private Roland Hartup Combes enlisted at Newark, he served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 7th April 1917 and is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, Aisne, France.

Article published 21st April 1917 in the Newark Herald:- Son of George & Caroline Combes, 1 Charles Street, Newark. A member of Abbotts band and a bandsman in the Sherwood Foresters. Served through the Irish rebellion and was drafted to France in Feb. 1917. Killed in the early hours of Saturday morning. Brother Pte. C.W. ‘Monty’ Combes has been wounded three times. Eldest brother, George, was discharged owing to wounds received in France. Cpl. Albert Combes RMLI, HMS Minerva, has served in the Middle-East and Dardanelles.
