John Garrett Bussell

John was born on 3rd March 1882 in Balderton and was the son of Reverend Frederick Vernon Bussell vicar of Balderton and Marianne (Miriam) Bussell née Park, Frederick was born in 1846 in Newark and his wife Marianne was born in 1855 in Grove, their marriage in June 1876 is registered in the East Retford registration area. They went on to have 4 children: - Isabel Freda b1878 in Worksop, Grace Vernon b1879 Balderton, John Garrett b1882 Balderton and Muriel Agnes b1889 in Balderton. In the 1891 census the family are living at the Vicarage in Balderton, Frederick 45 yrs is the vicar of Balderton and is living at the vicarage with his wife Marianne 36 yrs and their children Isabel, Grace, John and Muriel, also at the address are two servants a cook and a housemaid. On 21st February 1892 John's father Frederick dies aged only 45 years leaving his wife Marianne a widow to raise 4 children. By the 1901 census, the family are living at Wootton Gardens at Bournemouth , Marianne is shown as a widow, 46 years of age and living off her own means, she is living at the address with her three daughters, Isabel now 23 yrs a teacher in a high school, Grace now 22 yrs and a governess and Muriel 12 yrs a student, also at the address is a servant. John is not shown at the address as by this time he was in the army and fighting in the South African Boer War.On 29th January 1907 John gets married to his wife Dorothea Bickerton at St John's church in Westminster, he is 24 years of age and his wife is 22 years old. They have a son whom they name John Garrett after his father, born 20th July 1909 in Headington, Oxfordshire, and later a daughter Kathleen born 1913, another daughter Priscilla born September 1914 in Marlborough and a son Lawrence born December 1915 also in Marlborough By the 1911 census the family are living at Rushland Lodge, Wyche Road, Malvern, Marianne is now 57 yrs, a widow living on private means and is living with her two daughters Isabel 33 yrs and Grace 32 yrs both of whom are still single. In the same census, John is now 29 years of age, he is a school master and is married, he is a visitor with the Simson family at Yattendon Rectory Derbyshire, the census gives us details of the fact that he has been married for 4 years and has 1 child. At the time of his death the family were living at Seven Stars, Marlborough.His probate was proven on 19th October 1915 in London he is shown as the Reverend John Garrett Bussell of Marlborough, Wiltshire, Clerk Captain of Royal Sussex Regiment, died 28th June 1915 in Flanders on active service, effects of £3149 4 shillings and 7 pence.
