Horace Frank Buckler was born on 10th August 1897 at Burton upon Trent, he was baptised on 27th February 1901 at St Peters and St John Church, Kirkley, Norwich, he was the son of Henry Charles Buckler a grocer and provisions merchant and May Guest Buckler née Griffin of 40, Marine Parade, Lowestoft. His father Henry Charles was born in 1867 at Brompton, London and his mother May Guest Griffin was born in 1871 at Burton upon Trent, they were married in 1891 at Nottingham and went on to have 8 children sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1911 census were, Cecelia b1893 Louth, Lincs, Horace France b1897 Burton on Trent, Madeline b1906 Lowestoft Joe b1906 Lowestoft, Dora b1908 Lowestoft. In the 1911 census the family are living at 307 London Road, Lowestoft and are shown as Henry Charles 44 yrs a grocer and provisions merchant, he is living with his wife May Guest 40 yrs and their children, Cecelia 18 yrs, Horace Frank a scholar, Madeline 9 yrs a scholar, Joe 5 yrs and Dora 3 1/2 years. Prior to his enlistment he was working and Smiths Chemist, Bridge Street, Newark and was living with his uncle and aunt Mr & Mrs G.H. Porter, at Winchilsea Avenue, Newark.
Private Horace Frank Buckler enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Lowestoft, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd June 1917 and his name is commemorated on the Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 7th July 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mr H.C. & Mrs M.G. Buckler, 40 Marine Parade, Lowestoft. Nephew of Mr & Mrs G.H. Porter, Winchilsea Avenue, Newark. Born Burton-on-Trent and educated at Rev. Clegg’s School, Lowestoft. Became apprentice to Messrs. J.H. Smith & Co., chemists, Bridge Street, Newark, where he served a couple of years before joining local Sherwood Foresters in 1915.
