Thomas Brown was born in 1887 at Newark and was a twin to Percy sons of Henry a plasterer and Emma Brown née Johnson of Millgate, Newark. His father Henry was born in 1857 at Sibthorpe and his mother Emma Johnson was born in 1853 at Milford they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford Registration district, they went on to have the following children all born in Newark, Henry b1883, Ernest b1886 and Percy and Thomas b1887. Thomas Brown married his wife Emily Parker (born 1888 at London) in 1907 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, Thomas b1908, Ernest b1910 and William b1912, In the 1911 census his parents are living at 30 Sydney Terrace, Bowbridge Road, Newark and are shown as Harry 58 yrs a plasterer he is living with his wife Emma 59 yrs and their sons Ernest 25 yrs a bricklayer and Percy 23 yrs a general labourer, In the same 1911 census Thomas is living at 16 Crescent Place, Newark and is shown as Thomas 24 yrs a foundry labourer, he is living with his wife Emily 23 yrs and their sons Thomas 3 yrs and Ernest 1 year of age.
Private Thomas Brown enlisted in August 1916 at Newark and served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was posted as missing on 23rd October 1916 but was not officially confirmed as killed in action until 19th June 1917. He was killed in action at Bancourt on 23rd October 1916 and is buried at Bancourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 23rd June 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Resided with wife and three young children in Millgate, Newark. Twin son of Mr & Mrs Henry Brown, 30 Sydney Terrace, Bowbridge Road. Educated at the Wesleyan Day School and later London Road Congregational Sunday School. Worked at Ransome & Co. then at Chilwell, before enlisting in Aug. 1916. Had brief training at Grimsby before joining Lincolns. Only in France for a short period before being posted missing. Officially declared dead in June 1917. Twin brother Pte Percy Brown is in the Royal Marine Corps, attached to the ASC in France. Other brother, Pte Ernest Brown, Loyal Lancs. is stationed in Norfolk.
