Andrew Brown was born in 1889 at Newark and was the son of the late John James and Mary Ann Brown, née Hartley of Rowbotham Row, Water Lane, Newark. His father John James was born in 1849 at Newark and he died on 19th October 1907 at Newark, aged 58 yrs , his mother Mary Ann Hartley was born in 1842 at Newark, they were married on 20th June 1871 at Newark Registry office, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Newark, John James b1878 William b1879, Mary Jane b1881, Lucy b1883 and Andrew b1889. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Rowbotham Row, Water Lane, Newark and are shown as Mary 68 yrs a widow , she is living with her children, William 32 yrs a labourer, and Andrew 22 yrs a labourer. Andrew married his wife Eliza Hudson in 1917 at Newark , they lived at 7 Water Lane, Newark.
Private Andrew Brown enlisted at Newark and served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 25th June 1917 and is buried at Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension, France
Article published 7th July 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Resided with wife at 7 Water Lane, Newark. Prior to enlisting in 1915 worked as a maltster at Gilstrap, Earp & Co. Served through Irish rebellion before going to France in Feb. 1917. On duty by the company kitchen when shelling began. Hit by a piece of shell while running to take cover.
