John Robert Bell was born in 1899 at Worksop and was the son of the late William a boiler maker and Alice Bell. His father William was born in 1872 at Metheringham, Lincolnshire he died in 1907 he was 36 yrs of age. His mother Alice was born in 1869 at Newark, they had a further child Fanny born 1897 at Worksop, In the 1901 census the family were living at 7 Long Row at Newark. In 1909 Alice married Charles Croft a farm labourer at Newark, Charles had previously been married and brought 3 children to the marriage, Annie Croft b1898, Robert Croft b1899 and Mary Croft b1901, they went on to have a daughter Elsie Croft b 1910 at Balderton In the 1911 census the family are living at Cowtham House, Balderton and are shown as Charles Croft 48 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Alice 44 yrs and their children, Annie Croft 13 yrs a scholar, Robert Croft 12 yrs a scholar, Mary Croft 10 yrs a scholar, John Bell 11 yrs a scholar, William Bell 7 yrs a scholar and Elsie Croft 1 year old. At the time of her sons death his mother Alice was living at 4 Philadelphia Place, Albert Street, Newark.

Military History

Private John Robert Bell enlisted at Newark and served with the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 6th October 1918 and is buried at Naves Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
