Richard Alfred Beardmore was born in 1872 at Newark and married his wife Alice Walster in 1901 their marriage was recorded in the Sheffield Registration District, they lived at 12 Tallands Row, Appleton Gate, Newark. Nottinghamshire. They had 3 children all born in Newark Margaret born 1st January 1904, Eliza born 28th September 1905 and Sarah Ethel born 1st 1ST September 1912. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Philedelphia Place, Albert Street, Newark and are shown as Richard Alfred 40 yrs a millers carter, he is living with his wife Alice 35 yrs and their children, Margaret 7 yrs and Eliza 5 yrs.
Private Richard Alfred Beardmore originally enlisted into the Army on 26th March 1892 at Lancaster, he was 19 yrs and 6 months old, and a groom, he served with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers and saw service in India 1892-1898, South Africa 1898 - 1900 and back to India 1900 - 1902. He was posted to the reserves on 15th November 1902 and discharged time served on 25th March 1904. He had been awarded a South Africa medal with two clasps. At the outbreak of war he re enlisted at Newark on 12th September 1914, he was now 42 yrs of age, he stated he was a drayman and his address was 5 Paceys Court New Street, Newark. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters however on 29th April 1916 was posted to the Royal Defence Corps. He saw no service overseas and was discharged from the Army unfit for further service (reoccurring bouts of malaria) on 21st May 1918. He was issued with a Silver War Badge Number 393736. He had served for 3 yrs and 257 days and was 46 yrs of age. He died on 22nd May 1918 and is buried in Newark Cemetery.
Article published 29th May 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Husband of Alice Beardmore, 5, Pacey’s Court, Newark. Served 14 years in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers and went through Boer War. Being at Elanglaate and the relief of Ladysmith. Re-enlisted on Sept. 10th, 1914 and until May 21st was in Royal Defence Corps. Returned home three weeks before passing away.
