Ernest Barton was born in 1890 at Newark and was the son of John Wilson Barton a barley carrier and Kate Barton nee Ashmore of 20 Lombard Street, Newark. His father John Wilson Barton was born in 1856 at Boston, Lincolnshire, his mother Mary Ann Ashmore was born in 1862 at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, they were married in 1878 at Newark and went on to have 15 children, sadly 9 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Kate b1879 Fenton, Thomas William b1881 Fenton, Clara b1888 Barnby, Lincolnshire, Alfred b1888 Newark, Ernest b1890 Newark, Ethel b1893 Newark and Bertie b1898 Newark. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 10 Albion Street, Newark and are shown as John Wilson 55 yrs a barley carrier, he is living with his wife Kate 49 yrs and their children, Ethel 18 yrs a domestic servant, and Bertie 13 yrs a scholar It has not been possibly to trace Ernest Barton on the 1911 census.
Private Ernest Barton enlisted at Newark and served with 'B' Company, 1/7th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 14th November 1916 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published on 13th December 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of John Wilson Barton & Kate Barton. 20 Lombard Street, Newark. Attended Christ Church school. Later employed at Warwicks & Richardsons brewery, then Messrs. Nicholson & Son. Enlisted at Newark, March 1916 and went out to France. After four months fighting he was missing from November 14th. Two of his brothers were in France: Pte. Alfred Barton, RAMC and Driver B.W. Barton, ASC. A brother-in-law, Pte. G. Boothroyd, Sherwood Foresters, is in England.
