Albert Owen Atkinson was the son of John Atkinson and Harriett Wakefield, who married in Nottingham in 1891. They had four children; John Claude, born in 1892, Albert Owen, born in 1894, Winifred Emily, born in 1896 and Edward William, born in 1901. The family lived at 6 Fretwell Street, Hyson Green, 213 Bobbersmill Road, Hyson Green before moving to 211, Bobbers Mill Rd., Hyson Green, Nottingham. John Atkinson was a perambulator maker and died in 1937. Harriet died in 1939. In 1916 Albert Owen married Lily Jackson at Nottingham. They lived at 17 Chapel Street, Bobbersmill.
Pte. Atkinson enlisted in Nottingham and following training he was drafted to France. After the battalion, which was mainly from South Belfast, had sustained severe casualties on the Somme, they were moved to a relatively quiet area in Northern France. Even so, there was regular shelling and small arms fire, and on 13/11/1916 Pte. Atkinson was severely wounded and died the same day. He was buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension.
The family were practicing Methodists.
