Thomas Asher was born in 1894 at Kilvington and was the son of John a postman and . Eliza Asher, née Rollingson of 15, Eldon St., Newark. His father John Asher was born in 1867 at Hawksworth, his mother Eliza Rollingson was born in 1872 at Diss, Norfolk, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Thomas b1894 Kilvington, the remaining children were all born in Newark and were, Florence b1899, Elsie b1902, George b1904, Harold b1905, Herbert b1908 and Reginald b1910. In the 1911 census the family is living at 15 Eldon Street, Newark and are shown as John 44 yrs a postman, he is living with his wife Eliza 39 yrs and their children, Thomas 17 yrs an iron moulder, Florence 12 yrs a scholar, Elsie 9 yrs a scholar, George 7 yrs a scholar, Harold 6 yrs a scholar, Herbert 3 yrs and Reginald 1 year of age.
Sapper Thomas Asher attested on 8th December 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 42 days , his address as 15 Eldon Street, Newark and his next of kin as his father John of the same address, he gave his occupation as that of a moulder. He was posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised on 4th December 1916 and posted to the Royal Engineers, and on 6th January joined C Company Royal Engineers. on 16th April 1917 he was admitted to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, delirious and suffering from problems in his leg which was eventually amputated, he died at the hospital the same day, the cause of death was given as septicemia. His body was returned to his family and he was buried on 21st April 1917 at Newark -upon-Trent Cemetery. He did not serve abroad.
