Son of William and Mercy Key of 5,Beck St, Carlton, Nottingham. He was born 1898 at Carlton one of seven children born to the family, although only four survived Horace, Ernest, Elsie and Mabel. William was a bricklayers labourer.
Ernest enlisted at Nottingham. He went to France on 18 October 1917 serving with B Company departing Folkestone and arriving at Boulogne. During his time in France Ernest was in and out of hospital with scabies. He was also admitted in May 1918 from gas wounds and again in June 1918. He was wounded in the neck and died of these wounds received in action at the 1/1 NM Field Ambulance and is buried in Fouquieres Churchyard Extension in the Pas de Calais region of France. On 1st November 1917 Ernest made a will leaving everything to his 'dear' Mother with requests that his silver watch chain go to his brother Horace and the watch to his Father William, plus some little tokens to his sisters. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals
The War Graves paperwork all gives the date of death as 22nd whereas Carlton War Memorial says 23rd.
