Family History

William was born in 1887 at Clarborough and was the son of John a farm labourer and Eliza Peatfield, John and Eliza had nine children , sadly two died in infancy. In the 1901 census the family are living at Beck Row, Spital Hill, Retford by this time John is a labourer in a brickyard as are his three sons Fred born 1885 - William born 1887 and George born 1890 , there are two further children daughter's Florence born 1892 and Rose born 1898. By the 1911 census the family are living at Bakehouse Yard, Retford, William is now 24 years of age , single and a carter/coal merchant , also still at the address is George now 22 years a farm labourer and Rose aged 13 years.

Military History

William enlisted at Retford giving his place of birth as Clarborough , at first he served with service number 40289 in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding regiment) he later transferred to the 5th battalion Machine Gun Corps (infantry). he was killed in action on 23rd October 1918 and is buried at Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension ,Nord, France grave reference III B 8 .
