Joseph was born in 1894 at Blyth and was the son of Thomas , a labourer on 'the estate' and Ann Peatfield , of Ranby. Thomas and Ann had a total of 9 children , however two of them died in infancy. In the 1901 census when Joseph is 7 years of age the family are living at Ranby and are still there 10 years later in the 1911 census when Joseph is now 17 years of age. He became the under chauffeur for Col. Sir A E Bingham of Ranby House.
Joseph enlisted at Retford on 1st September 1914 , giving his place of birth as Ranby. he served with the 7th battalion , Lincolnshire Regiment . His medal index card show he first entered a theatre of war in the Balkans on 18th July 1915 and saw action at Gallipoli . He later fought on the Western Front and was a lewis gunner .He was killed in action on 5th September 1918. he is buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension grave reference 3.D.25
Sgt J Peatfield Retford Times 11th Oct 1918 It is with deep regret we announce the death of Sgt J Peatfield, a Lewis Gunner who was killed in action in France on the 5th Sept 1918. Before joining the Army he was under chauffeur for Col. Sir A E Bingham of Ranby House. He enlisted on Sept 1st 1914 and went with the 6th Lincolns to the Dardanelles and took part in a lot of hard fighting. He went from there to the Suez Canal and from thence to France about two years ago. He fought in the Battle of Thiepval. He was 24 years of age and was the son of Mr and Mrs T Peatfield of Ranby, with whom much sympathy is felt in their bereavement. They have two other sons serving, Pte Fred Peatfield, who is in a Labour Battalion in France and Pte A Peatfield who is training in a M.G.C.
