Family History

Francis Leonard Bentley was born in 1899 he was the son of William Hirst an iron turner and Annie Eliza Bentley née bates of 8 Warren Avenue Haydn Road Nottingham. He was the brother of Bernard William, Harold Hirst, Frederick Thomas and Lillian Maud Bentley. William Hirst was born in 1874 at Derby, Annie Eliza Bates was born in 1875 at Nottingham, they were married in 1894 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 7 Ditton Street, Radford, Nottingham, William Hirst 37 yrs is an iron turner, he is living with his wife Annie Eliza 36 yrs a lace mender and their 5 children, including Francis Leonard 12 yrs a butchers boy.

Military History

Private Francis Leonard Bentley enlisted at Nottingham, he was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 20, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) 21st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Commemorated: Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
