George was born in 1893 the son of Herbert and Mary Ann Thornton of 33, Spring Gardens, Long Acre, Bingham. In 1901, he lived with his parents and siblings Sarah, Ernest and Charlotte at Aslockton. His father was a farm carter. In 1911, they lived on Union Street, Bingham. He married Martha Cowdell during the second quarter of 1915. Martha married William Buttress in 1919 and lived at Saxondale, Bingham, Nottingham
George Thornton enlisted at Bingham and was killed in action. Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A
War Diary on Day of Death: 10th November 1917 The Battalion relieved the 17th BATTALION SHERWOOD FORESTERS in the right SUB SECTION POLDERHOEK SECTION whilst the relief was in progress 5 men were killed and 6 wounded. Total casualties for the day 5 killed 8 wounded.
