William Addison Lake was born in 1887 at Attenborough and was the son of Henry Addision Lake a silk warehouse man and Hannah Mary Lake née Barker of the Orchards, Attenborough His father Henry Addison Lake was born in 1847 at Hyson Green and his mother Hannah Mary Barker was born in 1855 at Pontypool, Monmouthshire; they were married in 1877 at Islington and went on to have the following children, Henry Barker b1878 Long Eaton, Virginia Helen b1880 Long Eaton, George Ernest b1882 Long Eaton, Sydney Arnold b1885 Long Eaton, Frank Bernard b1885 Long Eaton, William Addison b1887 Attenborough, Alice Mary b1887 Attenborough, Frances Evelyn b181 Attenborough, Stephen Godfrey b1893 Attenborough, and Gerald b1895 Long Eaton. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Orchards, Attenborough and are shown as Henry Addison Lake 64 yrs a silk warehouse man, he is living with his wife Hannah Mary 56 yrs and their children, Alice Mary 26 yrs at home, Frances Evelyn 20 yrs assistant certificated teacher and George Ernest 29 yrs a bank cashier. William Addison Lake: Probate was proven on 15th January 1918 at Nottingham and shows him as William Addison Lake of The Orchards, Attenborough Second Lieutenant H.M.Navy died on 28th April 1917 in France or Belgium. Effects £461, 14shillings and 4 pence. Administration of the estate awarded to Mabel Fewkes, spinster.His father Henry died on 6 February 1919 and his mother Hannah on 25 March 1947 aged 92.
Second Lieutenant William Addison Lake was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 25th October 1916. He served with the British Expeditionary Force from 8th December 1916 and joined the 2nd battalion Royal Marine Light Infantry on 14th December 1916.He was killed in action on 28th April 1917; having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery.
His brother Stephen Godfrey Lake born 20th July 1891 emigrated from Liverpool on 27th January 1911 he was 18 yrs of age, he travelled on the Empress of India and went to St John's New Brunswick, Canada. On 18th February 1916 he enlisted at Blairmore Alberta into the Canadian Army, he was 23 yrs of age, single and a chemist, his next of kin was his father in England. He died on 11th May 1916 in York Ontario, Canada. He was 24yrs of age. He is not recorded on the CWGC or The Canadian national memorial.
