Clayton cannot be traced from census data. However, a letter from the Chief Constable of Nottingham 2/3/1920 advises the Officer in Charge, Labour Corps Records in Nottingham that 'enquiries have been made and it has been ascertained that the deceased lived with George William Cooper 27 Truman Street Kimberley and was employed by Hardy's Brewery there. I understand that John Thomas Porter, a game keeper residing at Lambley and his brother Robert Porter of Woodborough, Mrs Hannah Shelton of Lowdham and Eliza Jones of Lambley, all in the county of Nottingham are related to the deceased soldier and may be able to furnish you with information as to Private Clayton's next of kin.'
