Albert Ernest Mowbray was born in 1885 at Nottingham and was the son of Edward Thomas and Margaret Mowbray née Flinders (she died on 23rd September 1916) of 301 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham. His father Edward Thomas was born in 1864 in Sneinton, his mother Margaret Catherine Flinders was born in in 1865 in Ardwick, Manchester, they were married in 1884 in Nottingham and went on to have 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early infancy, their children all born in Nottingham were , Albert Ernest b1885, Edward Thomas b1886, Everard b1890, Charles b1893, Harold b1897, Maggie b1899 and Clarence b1901 Albert Ernest married his wife Edith Vickers in 1908 in Nottingham in the 1911 census they are living at 8 Macfarlane Lane Lenton Nottingham and are shown as Albert 26 yrs an iron founder, he is living with his wife Edith 26 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find his parents and siblings living at 301 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham, they are shown as Edward Thomas 47 yrs a lace dresser, he is living with his wife Margaret 46 yrs and their children, Everard 21 yrs a cotton silk dyer, Charles 18 yrs a fitter, Harold 14 yrs a scholar, Clarence 10 yrs a scholar and Maggie 12 yrs.
Private Albert Ernest Mowbray, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), he was killed in action on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme and he is buried at Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery Grave Reference: 1 D 17
In memoriam published 23rd September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MOWBRAY. – In loving memory of our dear mother, Margaret, who died Sept. 23rd, 1916; also our dear eldest brother, Albert, killed in the Battle of the Somme, July 1st, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Ted, Everard, Charles, Harold, Maggie, and Clarence (in India).” Above in memoriam is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918 His brother Charles Henry Mowbray enlisted on 13th August 1914 at Nottingham, he was 22 yrs and 244 days old, he was a motor mechanic, he served with the Royal Field Artillery landing in France on 12th June 1915, he survived the war and left the Army on 31st March 1920.
