Family History

Frederick Shaw Clay was born in 1898 he was the son of John a carter and Alice Ida Clay née Shaw and the brother of Ernest, Mary Ann, Bruce, Arthur and Thomas Clay of Kimberley John was born in 1845 and Alice Ida Shaw was born in 1855 both were born in Kimberly , John died in 1908 63 yrs and Alice died in 1909 aged 53 yrs they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children. In 1911 Frederick Shaw and his siblings lived at Brickfield House Kimberley, his elder brother Ernest Clay 26 yrs a joiner and wheelwright is the head of the family he is living with his siblings including a Frederick Shaw Clay 13 yrs a shop assistant at the co operative store. Upon his death his sister Mary Ann Clay is his next of kin.

Military History

Lance Corporal Frederick Shaw Clay enlisted at Nottingham he resided at Hadleigh, Essex, He was killed at Langemark on 24th September 1917 and is buried in Beleuet Farm Cemetery (grave ref l/E/43).

Extra Information

The family memorial is on the south wall of the nave in Holy Trinity church (WMA26883). Inscription: 'Sacred to the memory of Lance-Corpl Fredk Shaw Clay, Coldstream Guards, who was killed at Langemark, Sept 24th 1917, aged 20 years. Peace, perfect peace.'
