Family History

Samuel Parkes was born in 1900 at Shelford he was baptised on 7th January 1900 at St Peter and St Paul Church Shelford and was the only son of George Reuben a farm labourer and Evelyn Parkes née Green of The Cottage, Shelford, Notts. His father George Reuben was born in 1876 at Shelford, his mother Evelyn Green was born in 1878 at Skegby, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, they went on to have a daughter Rebecca Ann born 1905 also at Shelford. In the 1911 census the family are living at Shelford with his widowed grandmother Rebecca Parkes 76 yrs a widow and old age pensioner, she is living with her son George Reuben Parkes 35 yrs a farm labourer and his wife Evelyn 33 yrs and their two children, Samuel 11 yrs a scholar and Rebecca Ann 6 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Samuel Parkes attested on 2nd June 1917 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 8 months and his address was The Cottage, Shelford, Nottinghamshire. He gave his occupation as that of a mechanic and his next of kin as his father George Reuben of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 2nd November 1917 and reported to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment depot at Derby. He landed in France on 5th April 1918 and was posted to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was wounded by a gas shell on 16th August 1918 and admitted to the 2nd Canadian General Hospital at Le Treport where he died of his wounds on 30th August 1918 he is buried at Mont Huon military cemetery, Le Treport, France.
