Leslie Cooley Parkin was the son of George William Parkin and Gertrude Adelaide A. Brookes who married at Nottingham in 1896. Their two children were: Leslie Cooley (b.1897) and Linda Gertrude (b.1898). In the 1901 census Gertrude and her son Leslie were living with her mother, Elizabeth Brookes, at 111 Willoughby Street, Lenton. Her daughter, Linda, appears to be staying with her paternal grandparents, John and Georgina Parkin, at Leamington Spa. It is not clear where her husband, George William, was at this time. In 1911 Gertrude and both her children were living with her mother, Elizabeth Brookes, who had now moved to 33 Garfield Road, Radford. Her husband, appears to be an inmate of a hospital at Bulwell. No.33 Garfield Road was given as Private Leslie C. Parkin’s home address when his death notice appeared in the local paper [n.e.p.21.6.1917] when it also stated that his parents were William & Gertrude Parkin. The same address was given for them in the records of the CWGC. George William Parkin, probably worked as a tailor, died at Nottingham, aged 75, in 1945. His wife, Gertrude Adelaide, had died a few months earlier at Nottingham. She was also aged 75.
Private Leslie Cooley Parkin, served with the 1/15th London Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own Civil Service Rifles), he was killed in action 7th June 1917. His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
Obituary published 21st June 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PARKIN. – Killed in action, June 7th, 1917, Private Leslie C.
