Harry Charles Lawton Randall was born in 1900 at Newark and was the son of Charles William a brewers labourer and Kate Maria Stevenson Randall née Stevenson of Newark. His father Charles William was born in 1866 at Newark and his mother Kate Maria Stevenson was born in 1870 at Sheffield, they were married in 1897 at Newark, they have a further son Ernest William born 1898 at Newark. In the 1911 census , his mother Kate Randal is living at 21 Lombard Street, Newark with her widowed mother Eliza Stevenson 64 yrs an office caretaker, also living with her at the address are her two sons Ernest William 13 yrs a scholar and Harry Charles 11 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census we find his father Charles Randall living at 3 Victoria Place, Newark, he is living alone and is shown as being 45 yrs and a brewers labourer.
Private Harry Charles Lawton Randall attested on 7th September 1916 at Newark, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 120 days, his address was 21 Lombard Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father Charles William of the same address , he gave his occupation as a butchers apprentice. He was posted to the reserves the following day, mobilised for war on 16th May 1917 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters. On 18th August 1917 he was transferred to the training battalion and on 30th March 1918 embarked from Folkstone arriving the following day at Boulogne. On 5th April 1918 was posted tot he 15/17th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 19th July 1918 and is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. 2.D.6
Article published in the Newark Herald 5th July 1919 :- Younger son of Charles William & Kate Randall of 21 Lombard Street, Newark. As a boy attended Lovers’ Lane School and a member of the 3rd Newark Troop of Boy Scouts. Later he entered the employ of his uncle, Mr W.L. Stephenson, butcher, Church Street and was with him until he joined-up on May 11th, 1917 when he went into the 51st West Yorks. He proceeded to France on April 1st, 1918 and transferred to the 15th West Yorks. with whom he remained until reported wounded and missing on 19th July 1918, presumed dead in July 1919. His elder brother, Engineer Ernest Randall is serving on the Royal Steamship Anversville, under the Elder Dempster Company.
