Harry (or sometimes Henry) Marvell was the fifth child of Isaac Marvell and Charlotte Emma Richardson who married in 1872 Stamford. They had 10 children in all, ranging from 1873 to 1899. They were Robert 1873, John 1875, Sarah 1877, George 1881, Harry 1882 , Mable Eliza 1895, Rose 1888, Edward 1890, Arthur Albert 1897 and Alice 1899. For most of their time, the family lived at Stamford at 45 St Leonards Street. Harry was the first of the boys to leave home as he enlisted in the army and served for many years. John William Marvell had moved to Worksop by 1899 and married Annie Maria Rhodes. They had 3 children all born in Worksop, but tragically John’s wife died in 1908 age 30. By 1911 John was living at 77 Gateford Road, Worksop, with his 3 children and working as a coal miner. The head of the house was his widowed mother in law, Rose Rhodes. A second son also appeared in Worksop before 1911. Edward Marvell married Selina Ethel Draycott in Worksop in 1910 and had a child, Sidney whilst living at 12 Dennis Street, Worksop. Meantime, Harry had completed his service and in 1911 was living back at home with his parents at 45 St Leonards Street, but in 1912, he married Olive M Baldwin at St Albans. It was some time after this date that Harry, moved to Worksop as he is recorded as enlisting in the army at Worksop
Although Harry Marvell had previously served time in the army and fought in the South African campaign, he re-enlisted at Worksop in the Northampton Regiment. He had two brothers resident in Worksop at the time. He enlisted in the very early days of the war as he was drafted to France on the 12 November 1914. Nine months later he was killed in action whilst fighting at the Somme. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorail. He was awarded the 1914 Star, British and Victory Medal. His name also appears on the Roll of Honour Codicote War Memorial, Herfordshire, which is the home town of his widow, stating:- ‘Private 3/10436 Ist Bn Northampton Regiment, killed in action 17th August 1916, age 39, Born Stamford, Lincolnshire, enlisted Worksop, Nottinghamshire. Husband of Olive M. Hedger (formerly Marvell), of New Town, Codicote, Welwyn, Herts. Served in the South African Campaign. 21 years' service. No known grave, commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France’.
