Bernard was the son of Frederick and Gertrude Annie Ward. Frederick and Gertrude (nee Hobson) were married in 1893 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had at least three children: Harold b. abt 1894, Bernard b. 1897 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Doris. Doris was probably Doris Eva Ward b. 1899 (O/N/D Nottingham) who died aged four (death registered 1904 J/F/M Nottingham). Frederick probably died at the age of 28 in 1901 (J/F/M Nottingham) and at the time of the census the same year his widow Gertrude, a shirt machinist working from home, was living at 4 Halifax Square, Nottingham. Gertrude was head of the household and in the home on the night of the census were her three children, Harold (7), Bernard (3) and Doris (1), her unmarried sister DaisyHemstock (15) a lace clipper, and two boarders, Kate Cope (25), married, and working from the home as a lace clipper, and her daughter Dorothy Cope (5). Gertrude married William Churchill Beet (b. 1876, O/N/D Bingham) in 1903 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1911 William (36), a hotel barman, and Gertrude (37) were living at 12 Summer Street, Nottingham. Also in the home on the night of the census were Gertrude's two sons, Harold (17) who was in work, and Bernard (13) who was still at school, together with William and Gertrude's children, Leslie (6), Edith (3y 9m) and Irene (1y 6m). They had lost one child in infancy, probably William Churchill Beet b abt 1906 who died the same year (1906 O/N/D Nottingham). William and Gertrude later lived at 121 Vale Road, Colwick. Gertrude died aged 79 in 1951 (March Nottingham).
