Alfred Ward was born in 1897 at Eastwood and was the son of Alfred Ward and Maria Ulyatt, his mother was born in 1874 at Burton Joyce, she was married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. In the 1911 census he is living at 92 Station Road, Carlton with his widowed grandmother Ann Ulyatt 63 yrs and his mother Maria Ward 37 yrs, she is shown as a german seamer, Alfred married his wife Hannah Barker (born 3rd May 1897 ) in 1916 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 38 Garden City Carlton Nottingham. Following his death his widow Hannah was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 25th February 1918.
'C' Company 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) Private Alfred Ward enlisted at Nottingham, residence Carlton. Nottingham. Alfred was killed in action on 1 July 1917; he was initially reported missing in action and his death was not confirmed until late 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Bay 7). CWGC - History of the Arras Memorial (extract). The memorial is in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, and 'commemorates almost 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the Arras sector between the spring of 1916 and 7 August 1918, the eve of the Advance to Victory, and have no known grave. The most conspicuous events of this period were the Arras offensive of April-May 1917, and the German attack in the spring of 1918. Canadian and Australian servicemen killed in these operations are commemorated by memorials at Vimy and Villers-Bretonneux. In loving memory of my dear son, Pte Alfred Ward, Sherwood Foresters, of Carlton, reported missing July 1, 1917, now presumed killed, aged 19 (sic) years. Peaceful be thy rest, dear son, ‘Tis sweet to breathe they name: In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. From his sorrowing mother, grandma, aunts and uncles.
