He was the son of James and Elizabeth Ann King. His father was a printer and stationer.James and Elizabeth had four children; Richard Henry, Beatrice Ellen, William and Horace James who were all born in Mansfield.In 1891 James and Elizabeth lived at 22 Woodhouse Road, Mansfield, with their three young children; Richard (6), Beatrice (4) and William (2). James employed a general domestic servant, Sarah Walker (16). By 1901 they had four children; Richard, Beatrice, William and Horace (8, b, 2 July 1892) and were living at 1 Toot Hill Road, Mansfield. At the time of the 1911 Census only their second son, William (21), a lithographic printer, was in the household.Richard married Gladys Middleton in Mansfield in 1909 (J/F/M) and their first child, Morven Middleton King, was born the following year and a second son, James, in 1916. In 1911 the family lived 16 Park Avenue, Mansfield. Richard employed a nurse/housemaid and a general domestic servant. Richard's sister, Beatrice, married Sidney Ellison Larratt in Mansfield in 1910 (J/F/M) and their daughter, Jean Emerline, was born on 5 November 1910. In 1911 they were living at 15 Bath Lane, Mansfield. Horace James enlisted in the Royal Marine Artillery on 17 February 1915.Of Richard's family, his father died on 1 March 1935 aged 80 and his mother on 9 December the same year aged 76. Beatrice died on 15 February 1954 in The General Hospital Great Yarmouth, where she lived at 66 Crown Road. Horace died on 24 November 1962 aged 70; he died in Mansfield's Victoria Hospital but was living at 92 Newgate Lane Mansfield. William died on 13 December 1976 aged 87 years; his wife Annie had died in Saxondale Hospital, Radcliffe on Trent, on 30 October 1957 aged 69 years - at the time of her death they had been living at 2 Caudwell Drive, Mansfield.
Received his commission on 15 February 1917 and had previously served with the Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, service number 27306. He was killed near Ypres and is buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall), grave ref I.K.10.

He went to France with the 12th Battaliom’ in March 1917 and was killed in action near Ypres on June 17th 1917.’Nottingham Evening Post, Roll of Honour, 2 July 1917: ‘Killed. Lieut RH King. News was received yesterday of the death in action of Lieut RH King, of the Sherwood Foresters, of Mansfield. The deceased, who had been in the Nottingham OTC, had been in France several months. He was a well-known athlete and an excellent cricketer, captaining the Mansfield Club for some years, and once playing for the Notts. Colts.
