He was the son of John Thomas and Frances Foley and the brother of Ernest (died of wounds 23/8/1915 serving with 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters at Gallipoli) and Percy Foley. In 1901 they lived with Frances’s parents at Hipper Street Chesterfield and in 1911 at 22 Prospect Street Brockwell.
John Thomas Foley enlisted in November 1914, joining the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). After training he was posted to 1st Battalion in France on 17 February 1915. Less than a month later he was killed in action during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. At 10 am C company, advanced north east through the orchard on the left of the Foresters line and occupied some derelict houses. The battalion were shelled throughout the day by the enemy. At 4 pm., D company charged the enemy's breastworks but suffered heavy losses from machine gun fire and fell back. John was one of some 60 men killed that day in the attempt to take ground. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. John Morse
