Family History

Joseph William Hart was born in 1890 at Arnold, Nottingham and was the son of William Winter (Harry) a farm foreman and Ann Hart née Scrimshaw of Home Farm, Main Street, Oxton. His father William Winter was born in 1861 at Bassingham, Lincolnshire, his mother Ann Scrimshaw was born in 1861 at Cromwell, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they had 6 children, however 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Lily Winter b1883, Carlton, Rose Hannah b1885 Carlton, Gertrude Ann b1887 Arnold, Joseph William b1890 Arnold and Frank Hart b1897 Arnold. In the 1911 census the family are living at Home Farm Main Street Oxton Southwell Nottinghamshire and were shown as William Henry Hart 50 yrs a farm forman, he is living with his wife Ann 50 yrs and their children, Gertrude Ann 24 yrs a parlour maid, Joseph William 21 yrs a farm labourer and Frank 14 yrs a farm boy.

Military History

Private Joseph William Hart enlisted at Barnsley , he served with the 13th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 18th July 1916 and is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.

He was born J/A/S/1889 so may have been 27 when killed.aka William His brother Private Stephnies Henry Hart enlisted at Deptford, he served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards and was killed in action on 27th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai memorial, Louverval, France.
