Family History

He was the son of George Henry and Betsy Carter and the brother of Frank, Kate and Ethel Carter. In 1911 they lived at 32 Queen Street Sutton in Ashfield. George Henry and Betsy later moved to Stonyford Lane (both Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire).

Military History

Fred Carter entered theatre after 1st January 1916. The battalion occupied trenches south of Thiepval from 6th to 12th September. The 7th was stated as 'rather lively' and artillery from both sides was busy all day. The battalion had Captain Smeeton and two other ranks wounded and one killed. Fred was the one man killed, although the two other men would also died later of their wounds. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. John Morse
