Mary Ann Pashley and John Jarvis married 7th April 1891 at Harthill, Yorkshire. They resided at Worksop where they had 4 children, John Henry, Willis Jarvis Worksop 1895, Gertrude 1896 and Albert 1898. They left Worksop and had 2 more children, Arthur in 1901 at Hackenthorpe, Derbys and Clifford born 1904 in Clowne, Derbys. Sometime after 1904, the family returned to Worksop being resident at 2 Westwood View, Sandy Lane, Worksop in 1911, where all her six children were still residing. Mary Ann was described as a widow on this date, meaning her husband, John, had died. Willis Jarvis had worked as a chemical works labourer and at Shireoaks colliery before joining the colours in 1916.
Pte. Willis Jarvis Worksop Guardian 16 November 1917 Yesterday week, Mrs. Mary Jarvis, 1, Westwood view, Sandy Lane, Worksop, received official information from Lichfield that her second son, Pte. Willis Jarvis, Leicester Regiment, died on November 6th, at the General Hospital, Camiers, France, from gun shot wounds in the chest, received in action on October 22nd. The Rev. W. Dewdney, Chaplain to the Forces, in writing a letter of sympathy to the late soldier’s mother, says Pte. Jarvis, who was only 23 years of age, was buried with full military honours in ----------- Military Cemetery a quiet resting place by the sea. Pte. Jarvis enlisted voluntarily only in June last, previously to which time he had worked at Shireoaks Colliery. He was drafted to France on October 13th, after having six days leave, which he spent at home, and had only been in France a week prior to being wounded, and it is less than six months since he joined the Army. Pte. Jarvis was a soldierly young man, steady and industrious, and held in great respect by his friends and comrades. Fond of a game of football, he played for the Worksop Institute P. M. Much sympathy is expressed with his widowed mother and family in their bereavement. Mrs. Jarvis has another son in the army, Pte. Albert Jarvis, Machine Gun Corps, who is now serving in France.
