Family History

Roy Slater was born in 1895 at Leeds , he was baptised in Leeds on 23rd October 1895 and was the son of James a tramways painters labourer and Lucy Ann Slater née Green and the brother of Irene Marianne, Jeannette Annie and Ida Slater. James Slater was born in 1859 at Leeds, Lucy Ann Green was born in 1866 at Halton, Yorkshire, they were married in 1887 at Leeds and wnet on to have 7 children, sadly 2 were to died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 66 Dunstan Street Netherfield Nottingham, James was 52 yrs and a tramway painters labourer and Roy 15 yrs is a cotton mill preparer. James and Lucy later moved to 35 Woodward Street Trent Bridge Nottingham.

Military History

Private Roy Slater enlisted at Nottingham, he landed in France on 28th February 1915 and was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 20, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery
