Family History

Harold Underwood Slater was born in 1892 at Nottingham and was the son of William Henry (Harry) a shop keeper and Mary Annie (Marion) Slater née Underwood, of 27, Oliver St., Nottingham. His father William Henry was born in 1863 at the Riddings, Derbyshire, his mother Mary Annie (known as Marion) was born in 1871 at Plumtree they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Harold b192 Nottingham, Hilda Mary b1894 Bingham and Constance Clare b1905 Beeston. In the 1911 census the family are .iving at 14 Ossington Street, Radford and are shown as William Henry 49 yrs a fried fish shop keeper, he is living with his wife Marion 40 yrs and their children, Harold 18 yrs a grocers assistant, Hilda Mary 16 yrs a clerk to a lace manufacturer and Constance Clare 6 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Harold Umderwood Slater enlisted at Nottingham, Service number: 246987 (Sherwood Foresters regimental archive). In the Territorials before the war. He went to France in 1915. Reported missing on first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916 officially reported dead June 1917. Buried Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers (grave ref II.D.2).

War obituary, All Saints Church News, August 1917: 'Harold Underwood Slater, 27 Oliver Street, Private Sherwood Foresters, aged 23, an only son, was in Territorials previous to the war, went to France in 1915, reported missing July 1st 1916, now officially reported killed.'
