Anthony Wardle was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Benjamin Wardle a coal leader at Babbington Colliery and Mary Ann Wardle née Lebetter of 19 Queen Square, Old Basford, Nottingham. Benjamin was born in 1858 at Nottingham, Mary Ann Lebetter was born in 1853 at Ilkeston, they were married on 10th April 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Queen Street, Old Basford, Benjamin Wardle is 53 yrs of age is a coal leader at Babbington pit, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 58 yrs and their children, Samuel 24 yrs a coal miner hewer, John 17 yrs an apprentice twist hand Jennie 16 yrs a laundress and Anthony 13 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Antony Wardle enlisted at Nottingham, he served initially with the service number 35734 in The Sherwood Foresters Regiment and service number 32081 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was serving with the Wiltshire Regiment, when he died on 4th November 1918 and is buried at Valenciennes Communal Cemetery 3.D.9
