Family History

Joseph Thomas Odam was born in 1897 at Hucknall and was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Florence Odam née Webb of 74 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Florence Odam later lived at 250 Commercial Road Bulwell Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1877 at Nottingham and his mother Florence Webb was born in 1869 at London, they were married on 17th August 1895 at St Pauls Church, Hyson, Green, Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Joseph Thomas b1897 Hucknall, Wilhelmena b1899 Hucknall, Florence b1901 Mansfield Woodhouse and Henry b1904 Mansfield Woodhouse. In the 1911 census the family are living at 74 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse and are shown as Joseph 34 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Florence 42 yrs and their children Joseph Thomas 14 yrs a mill hand, Wilhelmena 12 yrs a scholar, Florence 10 yrs a scholar and Henry 7 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Joseph Thomas Odam enlisted at Mansfield, January 1915. He served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France 22nd June 1915 and was killed in action, 9th August 1915, aged 18, during the attack at Sanctuary Wood, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial panel 39 & 41.

Extra Information

Joseph's father, also called Joseph also enlisted on 18th January 1915 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 39 yrs and 280 days , he was a coal miner and lived at 47 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, giving his wife Florence of the same address as next of kin. He was posted to the 3rd battalion Sherwood Foresters, He was discharged as "no-longer physically fit for war service" on 11th April 1916.
