Family History

Leslie Parker was born in 1894 in Hyson Green and was the son of Thomas George a warper in the lace trade and Gertrude Emily Parker née Bradshaw, 32 Thurman Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Thomas George was born in 1870 at Wilford, his mother Gertrude Emily Bradshaw was born in 1869 at Leicester, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham and went on to have 3 children (according to the 1911 census) however only the following are found on the 1891/1901/1911 census, Leslie b1894 and Elsie b1900 both were born Hyson Green. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Thurman Street, hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas George 41 yrs a warper in the lace trade, he is living with his wife Gertrude Emily 42 yrs a cigar maker and their children, Leslie 17 yrs a threader in the lace trace and Elsie 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Gunner Leslie Parker, served with the 22nd Battery Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 16th August 1914 and died of wounds on 11th November 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 22 December 1914: 'Parker, died of wounds, Gunner Leslie Parker RFA, son of Thomas and Gertrude Parker, age 20.' Article published on 5th February 1915 in the Nottingham Daily Express :- Another Nottingham man serving with the same battery, Sgt. Joseph Gaskell Roulstone, recalled that, “Gunner Parker, a Radford man, was blown to pieces whilst helping in an attempt to bring a wounded man to safety and succour at the nearest hospital.” In memoriam published 15th November 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PARKER. – In loving memory of Gunner Leslie Parker, R.F.A., died of wounds, November 11th, 1914. Duty nobly done.
