Family History

Luke Raynes was born in 1897 to William and Elizabeth Ann Raynes, nee ball. He had 6 siblings whose births were located at either Tibshelf or Blackwell in Derbyshire. The children were, John Thomas 1885, George 1886, Mary 1888, Albert 1892, Dora 1895, Luke 1897 and Olive 1901. In the early days of their marriage, William, a miner, lived at Tibshelf, at Hill Field and Haddon Street but by 1911, the family were living and working at Larpit Lane Whitwell, near Worksop. Luke Raynes, at the age of 14, was working in the local colliery as a pit pony driver. They later moved to Kilton Road, Worksop prior to Luke enlisting,

Military History

Luke enlisted early in the war at Whitwel, joining the Lincolnshire Regiment. His medal index card places him as his first theatre of war as in the Balkans on the 1st December 1915, before moving to France where he was killed in action and now is commemorated at Queens Cemetery Bucquoy, France. He was awarded the 1915 Star, British and Victory Medal. Extract from the Worksop Guardian 18 October 1918 In a letter to his mother, Mrs Hewitt, 71 Sandy Lane, Pte F Hewitt, Norfolk Regt, mentions a number of Worksop lads, all friends who joined at the same time, who have been killed or wounded in the recent fighting. Dick Brunt, he says, was killed, and a number of Worksop lads wounded are, Hutchinson, Scott, Scorah, Raynes and Chambers.
