Charles was born in 1883 at Newark and was the son of William Cobb a maltster and Mary Cobb nee Warriner of 8 Paxton's Court, Kirkgate, Newark. His father William was born in 1862 at Newark and his mother Mary Warriner was also born in 1862 at Newark, they were married in 1880 at Newark and went on to have 13 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, George b1881, Charles b1883, Mary b1885, Elizabeth b1889, Albert b1893, Harriett b1895, Kate b1897, Emily b1899, Annie b1902, Doris b1903 and John William b1909. Charles Cobb married his wife Lily Mary Ann Sexton in 1904 at Newark, they went on to have the following children Albert b196 Newark, James Charles b1908 Great Yarmouth, Lily b1910 Newark and George b1913 at Newark they lived at St Leonards Court, Kirkgate, Newark. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 8 Paxtons Court, Kirkgate, Newark and are shown as William 49 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Mary 49 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 22 yrs a general servant, Albert 18 yrs a grocers assistant, Harriet 16 yrs a willow peeler, Kate 14 yrs a scholar, Emily 12 yrs a scholar, Annie 9 yrs a scholar, Doris 7 yrs and John William 2yrs. In the same 1911 census Charles and his family are living at 11 St Leonards Court, Kirkgate , Newark and are shown as Charles 28 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Lily Mary Ann 24 yrs and their children, Albert 5 yrs , James Charles 3 yrs and Lily 10months of age
Private Charles Cobb enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Manchester, he served with the 8th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 28th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published on 19th May 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Second son of Mr & Mrs William Cobb, Paxtons Court, Newark. Resided with wife in St. Leonards Court, Newark. Born in Newark and educated at Lover’s Lane school. Later went into malting trade and was foreman at Messrs. Jas. Hole & Co. Spital kiln at the time of his enlistment in 1915. Joined Lincolns and went to France in summer of 1916 and was wounded in the head. Afterwards returned to active service. His widow and five children are at present living in Yarmouth. Eldest brother Pte George Cobb (York & Lancs) and younger brother Sgt. A. Cobb (Sherwood Foresters) are both in France. Brother-in-law, Pte F. Scraton (Sherwood Foresters) was posted missing in July 1916.
