Family History

Arthur Swannack was born into a family of nine children the fourth child of Edward and Mary Ann Swannack who had married in 1888. Their other eight children were John born 1889, Ellen 1893, George 1895, Herbert 1900, Thomas 1904, Gertrude 1906, Joseph 1908 and Frank born 1910. About 1909, the Swannack’s had moved and were living in Wainwright Cottages, Gringley on the Hill where Arthur was a farm worker. Sometime later, Edward Swannack, before the death of Arthur, moved to 9 Gamston Retford.

Military History

Arthur enlisted in the Notts and Derby Regiment at Retford, regimental number 48758. He later transferred to the 13th Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment. He died of wounds in hospital at Epsom Surrey. Pte Arthur Swannack Retford Times 25 Jan 1917 The late Pte Arthur Swannack (19) Kings Liverpool Regt, son of Mr and Mrs Edward Swannack, Gamston. He was wounded in action in France and died on Dec 28th at Epsom Hospital under circumstances reported in our issue of Jan 5th. He was buried with military honours on Jan 3rd at Epsom, the chaplain officiating. Mr and Mrs Edward Swannack were present at the funeral. Two other sons who are older are serving in France, vis. Pte John Swannack, Royal Irish Fusiliers and Pte George Swannack, Lincolns.
