Family History

Charley Seagraves was born in 1890 at Newark and was the son of William Seagraves of 3 Stanley Terrace, Beacon Hill, Newark. In the 1911 census he was living at Blenheim Barracks, Aldershot, Hampshire, he was 21 yrs of age and a soldier in the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards.

Military History

Private Charley Seagravea enlisted at Newark on 13th October 1908 and served with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards. He left the army time served however on the outbreak of was mobilised and served with the 4th battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 23rd November 1914 and was killed in action on 13th April 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

a.k.a. ""SEAGREAVES"". Article published in the local press :- Son of William Seagreaves, 3 Stanley Terrace, Beacon Hill, Newark. A general labourer, enlisted aged 19 in the 2nd Grenadier Guards on October 13th, 1908 (had previously joined Sherwood Foresters, but discharged when discovered to be under-age). Completed service in October 1911, recalled as a reservist in August 1914 and placed in 4th Battalion. In France from November 22nd, 1914 to February 3rd, 1915. Then home service before returning to France on August 15th, 1915. Killed in action.
