Frederick Bowler was born in Derby and was the son of Thomas a bus driver and Clara Bowler nee Malborn, they lived at 20 Virginia Street, Nottingham in 1901. His father Thomas was born in 1850 in Ashby De La Zouch and his mother Clara Malborn was born in 1857 in Clubley, they were married in 1874 their marriage was recorded in the Derby Registration District, they had the following children , Frederick b1883, Derby, Emma b1885 Derby, John b1888 Nottingham and Horace b1892 Nottingham. In the 1911 census Frederick is a boarding at a boarding house at 29 Bromley Place, Nottingham, he is shown as being 30 yrs and a railway company carter. Frederick married his wife Lizzie Orrill in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration distirct, they lived at 21 Briar Street, The Meadows, Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Dorothy born on 3rd March 1917. His widow Lizzie was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 23rd April 1917. His widow later re married and became Lizzie Kent (formerly Bowler) of The Queen's Arms Queen's Street Old Basford Nottingham.
Sergeant Frederick Bowler, D.C.M., enlisted at Nottingham 22nd August 1901. He served in Hong Kong from 24th January 1903 to 6th December 1904, Strait Settlements, 7th December 1904 to 11th December 1906 and India 12th December 1906 to 3rd November 1909. He went to France 4th November 1914. He was awarded the D.C.M. (Distinguished Conduct Medal) London Gazette 30th June 1915: "For conspicuous ability and zeal during the whole period his battalion has been on active service". He was promoted Sergeant 9th August 1915 and was wounded in action 31st August 1915. He was killed in action, 16th September 1916, aged 33, during the attack near Guillemont, France during the Battle of the Somme He is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, France. Plot 7. Row J. Grave 7. His official citation for his DCM was published in the 'London Gazette' on 30th June 1915: “For conspicuous ability and zeal during the whole period his battalion has been on active service.”
Death notice published 20th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BOWLER. – Killed in action, September 16th, 1916, Sergt. F. Bowler, D.C.M., of Sherwood Foresters, of 21, Briar-street.
