Born in 1887, he was the son of Samuel Bowden a railway inspector. He was one of at least 8 children. John's mother had died by 1901 and he and his father were living with John's married sister Margaret Ann in Nottingham at 17 Doncaster Terrace off Glapton Road in the Meadows area. He was still there with his sisters family in 1911. At the end of 1911 John married Jessie Palmer who later lived at 5 St Cuthbert's Road Carlton Road Nottingham.
John enlisted in Nottingham. He was killed in action during a trench raid on 9th September 1917. He is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos,in France. He was eligible for the Victory and British medals
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 24 September 1917: 'Bowden. Killed in action September 9th 1917, Private John Gornell Bowden, Sherwood Foresters, age 30. Husband of Jessie Bowden nee Palmer of 8 St Cuthbert's Road, Carlton, Nottingham. Wife.' In memoriam published 9th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BOWDEN. – In loving memory of my dear brother, John Gornall Bowden, killed September 9th, 1917. Cherished memories. – Loving sister Mrs. Mayers and family. “BOWDEN. – In loving memory of John Gornall Bowden, beloved son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, killed September 9th, 1917.
