Joseph Bonser was born in 1886 at Radford, Nottingham and was the son of Harry a twist hand lace maker and Matilda Bonser née Curran of 27 Ortzen Street Radford Nottingham. His father Harry was born in 1855 at Radford and died in 1919, his mother Matilda Curran was also born in 1855 at Radford and she too died in 1919, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Joseph b1886, Harry b1888, Harriett b1894 and Florence b1897 all were born at Radford. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 27 Ortzen Street, Nottingham and are shown as Harry 56 yrs a lace maker twist hand, he is living with his wife Matilda 56 yrs and their children, Harry 22 yrs a shop assistant, Harriett 19 yrs a pattern girl and Florence 14 yrs an errand girl. In the same 1911 census we find that Joseph has left the family home he is boarding at 76 North Road, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire , he is shown as being 25 yrs of age, single a basket maker, he is boarding with Arthur Wilding Page 47 yrs a stone mason and his family.
Private Joseph Bonser enlisted at Nottingham at the beginning of the 'Great War' he served with 'C' Company 12th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915, having no known grave his anme is commemorated on the Loos Memorial
Joe [Joseph] Bonser, 27 Ortzen Street, Private Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 32 [CWGC 29], joined at the beginning of the war, reported missing September 27th 1915, “He was last seen on the way to Vermelles, alone, when thousands of shells were bursting over Loos.” The official notification of his death has now been received.'
