Family History

Ernest Carter was born in 1892 at Ruddngton he was the son of the late Thomas a hosiery manufacturer and Ada Carter née Cumberland. Thomas was born in 1853 at Ruddington, he died in 1906 aged 52 yrs, Ada Cumberland was born in 1856 at Ruddington, they were married on 9th April 1871 at Ruddington, they had 18 children, sadly 9 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Distillery Street, Ruddington, his mother Ada 55 yrs is a widow she is living at the address she is living with five of her children including Ernest 19 yrs a butcher apprentice. Ernest married Frances Hannah Whittaker (born 28th March 1897) in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Charles Street, Ruddington. Commencing 16th July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Ernest Carter enlisted at West Bridgford whilst residing at Ruddington, he served with the North Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on19th November 1916, he is buried at Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval Grave Reference: VII E 1
