Family History

Edmund James was born in Holloway, London in 1886. He was the son of Herbert and Alice Webb. The family later moved to 84 Bridge St in the city of Leicester. Edmund's occupation was that of joiner and he was also a Lay Preacher at the Baptist Chapel on Shelt Hill. He was married to Mary Ann Webb whose address is recorded as being 22 Morris Street, Daybrook, Nottingham. After his death she moved to Shelt Hill Woodborough .His service record shows that he had married his wife Mary Ann Binch on 25th May 1916 at Calverton and had two children Ruth Alice born 20th April 1910 in Calverton and Edmund Bertram born 14th May 1916 at Thorneywood.

Military History

Edmund enlisted on 2nd March 1916 and because of his occupation as a skilled carpenter he was originally posted to the Royal Engineers. On his service record which shows his enlistment papers he states his address is Florence Road,Thorneywood,Nottingham and that he was 30 years and 11 months old. He was posted to the Durham Light Infantry on 21st September 1917 ,he was serving in the 1/7th. Battalion Durham Light Infantry and was killed in action at Caix (near Amiens) during the fierce fighting of the German Spring Offensive. He died on 28th March 1918 and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial at Pozieres, France

Extra Information

On 14th October 1918 his wife Mary Ann was awarded a war pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week for her and her two children.
