Family History

Walter Stoppard was born in 1893 at Kiveton Park, Sheffield and was the son of Aaron a farmer and his first wife Annie Stoppard née Watson His father Aaron was born in 1862 at Bagthorpe , and married his mother Annie Watson in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Ashbourne registration district, they went on to have the following children, Mabel b1889, Edith b1891 and Walter b1893, all were born at Sheffield. His father went on to re marry in 1898 to Hannah Maria Clayton, their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield Registration district, they went on to have a son Arron CLayton Stoppard who was born in 1899 at Kirkby in Ashfield In the 1911 census the family lived at Coxmoor Farm Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire and were shown as Aaron 49 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Hannah Maria 40 yrs and his children, Walter 18 yrs a colliery banksman and Aaron Clayton 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Walter Stoppard enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 36013 in the King's Yorkshire Light Infantry . He was killed in action on 3rd May 1915 whilst serving with the 15th battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
