George Henry Stevenson was the second child born in Leicester in 1881 to Thomas and Sarah Ann Stevenson (nee Adkins). When he was born the family were living at 174 Curzon Street, Leicester and Thomas was working in the shoe manufacturing business. George Henry’s siblings were John aka James born 1874, Ethel in 1879, George H in 1881, Myra E in 1883, Albert E in 1885, Walter R in 1890 and Ethel May born 1901. By 1901, most of the family was growing up and working from 38 Westbourne Street, Leicester. James and Walter became compositors, Albert and his father worked in the shoe making business and George Henry, a bricklayer. In the next decade, George moved to Worksop where he continued in the bricklaying trade. In 1908 he married Alice Jane Dean at Worksop. Over the next few years the couple lived at 85 Netherton Road, Worksop and they had two children, George Eric born in 1909 and Elsie May in 1910,
George enlisted at Worksop early after the commencement of the war. He went to France on 20 May 1915, never to return. He was buried at Delville Wood Cemetery Longueval, France and posthumately awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British Medals.
