Family History

John William Varley was born in 1895 he was the son of George a coal miner hewer and the late Sarah Ann Varley née Coleman of 13 Phoenix Street, Sutton in Ashfield. George was born in 1855 at Bleak Hill, Sarah Ann Coleman was born in 1866 at Selston, she died in 1903 aged 37 yrs, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Following Sarah's death his father remarried in 1910 at Mansfield to Mary Clayton, In 1911 the family lived at 13 Phoenix Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. George 56 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his second wife Mary and his sons Arthur 20 yrs a coal miner hewer and John William 14 yrs a foundry hand.

Military History

Private John William Varley enlisted on 20th November 1914 at Sutton in Ashfield, giving his age as 19 yrs and 35 days, he was a coal miner. he initially served with the service number 19621 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died on 22nd October 1918 in Egypt from Dysentery and is buried at Haifa War Cemetery
