Family History

William Herbert was born in 1897 at Carlton, Nottingham and was the son of Robert a railway labourer and Nora Leaper, of 33, Mount Pleasant, Carlton, Nottingham. His father Robert was born in 1869 in Carlton and his mother Nora was born in 1874 Chesterfield, they were married C1896 and went on to have 3 children , sadly one was to die in infancy, their other child was Hector born 1903 in Carlton ( he died in 1911 aged 8 yrs.) In the 1911 census the family are living at 57 Cemetery Road, Carlton, Nottingham and are shown as Robert 42 yrs a railway labourer he is living with his wife Nora 37 yrs and their two children William Herbert 14 yrs a hosiery printer and Hector 8 yrs a scholar, in the census they state they have been married 15 yrs and have had 3 children 1 of whom has died.

Military History

Lance Corporal William Henry Leaper, enlisted on 6th October 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 4 months, his address as 28 Foxhill Terrace, Foxhill Road, Carlton he stated his religion was that of Church of England and named his father Robert of the same address as his next of kin. He served with the Army Cyclist Corps and was appointed Lance Corporal on 21st June 1917, it would appear he never saw service abroad and died in an Ipswich hospital on 7th August 1917. He is buried in Carlton Cemetery, Nottingham.
