Family History

Thomas Chester was born in 1894 the son of George a brickyard labourer and Harriett Chester née Crossley of 128 High Road, South Elmsall. George was born in 1867 at Finningley, Harriett Crossley was born in 1872 at Leeds, married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster Registration district, their children were , Thomas b1894 Finningley, their remaining children were all born in South Elmsall and were Alice b1896, Charlie b1897, George b1900, Herbert b1906 and Annie b1910. In 1911 the family were living on High Street, South Emsall. Thomas married Frances Mildred Barsby (born 19th June 1895) on 8th July 1916 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Kirkby in Ashfield, they lived at Shrewsbury Villas, Hartley Road, Kirby in Ashfield. Commencing 28th October 1918 his widow Frances was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Gunner Thomas Chester was called up on 8th May 1916 at Pontefract, he was posted to 232 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He embarked from Southampton on 18th January 1917 and disembarked the following at Le Harve. He died of wounds on 5th April 1918 and is buried in Beauvais Communal Cemetery (5.136)
