Henry (known as Harry ) Gregory was born in 1892 at Mansfield and was the son of Edward a hawker and the late Anne Gregory née Bower of Victoria Gardens, Balderton Gate, Newark. His father Edward was born in 1866 at Sutton in Ashfield and his mother Anne Bower was born in 1866 at Newark, she died in 1910 at Newark aged 45 yrs, they were married in 1888 at Mansfield and went on to have the following children, John b1890 Grantham, Henry b1892 Mansfield, Edward b1894 Grantham, Frederick b1895 Mansfield, Mary b1898 Mansfield and Joseph born 1899 Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Porters Yard, Newark and are shown as Edward 44 yrs a widow and a hawker, he is living with his children Frederick 16 yrs a brewers labourer, Mary 13 yrs a scholar and Joseph 11 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census Harry has left the family home, he is living at 176 Stockwell Gate, Mansfield with his widowed grandmother Mary Bower 69 yrs of age. He is shown as being 19 yrs single and a bricklayers labourer.
Private Harry Gregory enlisted at Nottingham on 4th July 1911 , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 4 months and stated he was a bricklayers labourer. He was posted to the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 11th November 1914. He was shot and died instantly at Neuve Chapelle on 7th April 1915, he is buried at Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Article published 8th May 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Edward & Anne Gregory, 1 Victoria Gardens, Baldertongate, Newark. One time in farm service with Mr. J. Doncaster at Holme. Then employed by Mr Horace Mills, wicker goods manufacturer. Then a situation at Mansfield where he joined the Special Reserve (called-up on outbreak of war). Shot and died instantly at Neuve Chapelle on April 7th.
